“Spirits In Motion” By Rya – Psychic Consultant
As a psychic consultant I have encountered many types of people from all walks of life: Buddhist monks, entertainers, therapists and even have worked with the police on a few rare occasions. Now you may be wondering “what has this little piece of info have to do with the belly dance community in of itself?’ It was because of my work as a promoter and psychic that I had my first experience with the belly dance community.
Some years ago, a friend who is also a promoter of psychic fairs in the Syracuse area called me, and told me that she had been approached by a “ tribal belly dancing” troupe in regards to dancing/performing at her psychic fair. They invited her to come and watch a performance along with other solo dancers which was being held at a senior citizens facility and based on that performance my friend would make the decision if she would have them perform at her fair or not. She asked me if I would like to go along with her, so I could offer her my opinion; she had concerns of it potentially being offensive or too over the top. She had never seen belly dancing before and, for that matter neither had I. What the heck, I was willing, open minded – didn’t my work denote that?
She and I arrived an were escorted into a relatively good sized room, some of the residents already gathered, some in wheel chairs, some not. My friend and I sat down in comfortable chairs, anticipation upon us. What would we be witness to? No clue, No idea. The troupe and solo performers entered, their coins jingling from belts, anklets, and hip scarves. The sound enticing, friendly and some how familiar, calling to a place within me so old that I had almost forgotten that it existed. My friend turned to me and made the comment “I love that sound” a twinkle in her eyes. Yup, she was hooked.
The music started, the dancing began. First the troupe performed then the solo performers. I was in awe. I was moved. It wasn’t the costumes, in wasn’t even the cornucopia of techniques and styles presented that had so moved me. It was the beauty and the joy that radiated from within these women that struck me with such power; I was witness to spirits in motion. Through their dance they bared their souls, they exposed their very hearts, they showed the truth of whom they really are; Beautiful, sensual, strong, & powerful women.
The performances ended and my friend turned to me and asked, excitedly “So what do you think? Do you think the public would be okay with this?” Wiping a tear from my eye, “I think it was moving, and I say “yes” the public will be okay with this.”
This was my introduction to belly dance, I too became an advocate for the “dance” and added belly dance to the psychic fairs I promote every spring. Many a time an individual will approach me after a dance performance and say, “I have just been educated, I had preconceived notions that it was going to be a shameful display.” This is one of the key reasons why I like to have the dancers there it educates the public about what belly dance really is and what it isn’t. It isn’t tassel twirling; it isn’t the “The Dance of The Seven Veils”. It is – “Sprits in Motion”, it is art, it is beauty, and it is an extension and expression of ones soul. It is honoring each other and ourselves as women, as mothers, as powerful beings and so much more… All articles on this website are the property of Rya Psychic Consultant, and are not to be copied without her consent. |
